What High School Graduation Really Feels Like as a Parent
Our son graduates high school this week.
And honestly, like many parents, we’re feeling a mix of emotions that are hard to fully explain unless you’re living it too.
Pride.
Excitement.
Gratitude.
A little uncertainty.
And probably the biggest realization of all:
The structure our kids have known their entire lives is about to change very quickly.
For years, life has been fairly predictable:
school schedules, sports, homework, routines, teachers, semesters, summers, graduation milestones.
Then suddenly, it stops.
And for many families, that’s when the pressure starts to creep in.
“What’s the plan now?”
“What if they don’t know what they want to do yet?”
“What if they make the wrong choice?”
“What if they waste time?”
We’ve spent a lot of time thinking about this in our own family over the last few years as our kids started reaching adulthood.
One thing we’ve learned is this:
Most young adults do not need their entire future perfectly figured out at 18.
But they do need momentum.
They need movement.
They need experiences.
They need responsibility.
They need opportunities to build confidence in the real world.
Direction usually grows out of movement far more often than pressure.
That’s something we believe very deeply.
Over the years, our kids have explored different types of work, seasonal jobs, travel opportunities, certifications, and experiences that helped them slowly figure out what fit them and what didn’t.
One worked the Disney College Program.
Another is heading to Yellowstone this summer.
There were moments of uncertainty mixed in with growth, confidence, and discovery.
And honestly, we’ve started realizing something important:
The world young adults are stepping into today looks very different than it did even 10 or 20 years ago.
Career paths are changing.
Education is changing.
Artificial intelligence is changing industries rapidly.
Many successful young adults are no longer building life in a perfectly straight line.
Instead, they’re layering experiences:
• certifications
• online learning
• seasonal work
• internships
• apprenticeships
• travel
• real-world skills
• networking
• flexible education paths
Sometimes the path becomes clear later — after movement has already started.
That’s a big part of why we created Cut River Farm.
Not because we believe every young adult should avoid college.
And not because we think there’s one “correct” path after high school.
But because we believe families deserve better conversations around what comes next.
Many teenagers don’t need pressure to have life fully figured out immediately.
They need guidance.
They need structure.
They need encouragement.
They need real-world opportunities.
And they need help building momentum.
We also believe financial decisions matter more than ever now.
The debt decisions made between 18 and 22 can shape decades of a young adult’s future.
That doesn’t mean avoiding education.
It means thinking more intentionally about:
• cost
• flexibility
• experience
• earning potential
• adaptability
• and long-term life goals
One thing we’ve noticed talking with other parents is this:
A lot of families quietly feel overwhelmed right now.
There are more choices than ever before.
But there’s also more uncertainty.
And sometimes what families need most is simply permission to slow down, think clearly, and build a path one step at a time instead of feeling pressured to immediately lock into one perfect answer.
We don’t pretend to have every answer.
We’re learning too.
But we do believe there are far more opportunities available to young adults today than many people realize.
And we believe confidence is often built through movement, responsibility, and experience — not perfection.
So if your child is graduating this year and still figuring things out…
That’s okay.
Really.
This stage of life is not just about choosing a career.
It’s about building a foundation.
One experience.
One skill.
One opportunity.
One step at a time.
